Yvonne van Vlerken succeeds at Challenge Wanaka

Yvonne Wanaka

Yvonne van Vlerken has won the Challenge Wanaka, the second oldest long distance race of the Challenge series. As always, IdeniXx cooling clothes contributed to the outstanding success.
The Dutch triathlete did not get behind her competitors Laura Siddall (GBR) and Anna Cleaver (NZL) and caught up with the top while swimming. But then, Yvonne started to have doubts. "I did not particularly feel strong on the bike," she said after the race. "Honestly, I was not as fit as you should be for such a race and for the fight to win."

But triathlon is more than merely physical. And so Yvonne van Vlerken didn’t get nervous when the US American triathlete Siddall filed past her after 100 kilometers. "Afterwards, when running, I knew that I would get through somehow." And not just “somehow”: After twelve kilometers van Vlerken filed past Siddall and broke free to win her first Challenge race in Wanaka about three minutes before Siddall.

DM2014 Chrisian Reif SHIRTVEST

Qatar attracts the biggest sporting events of the world in the next few years: World Swimming Championships (2014), World Men’s Handball Championships (2015), World Cycling Championships (2016), Artistic Gymnastic Championships (2018), FIFA World Cup (2022).

And now Qatar was selected host of the World Championships in Athletics in 2019. A decision of the International Association of Athletics Federations. Doha, the capital of Qatar, beat out Barcelona, Spain and the US city of Eugene.

According to IAAF, the competition will not be carried out in August, as usual, but in October. Thus, the Association tried to relieve the temperature problem.

Nonetheless, Clemens Prokop, President of the German Athletics Association has his doubts and judges the climate as a great challenge.

One thing is clear: This event will become hot. Lucky German athletes who are equipped with cooling wear such as cooling vest and cool shirt.

Jens Voigt LOW

As the first German professional cyclist, Jens Voigt set up the world record and beat the hour record of Ondrej Sosenka by 1415 m.

The first record of 35 325 km was set up in 1893 by the later founder of the Tour de France, Henri Desgrange. He was succeeded by many famous names such as Jacques Anquetil or Eddy Merckx and even more by technical innovations which pushed up performance in the hour records. But then, the International Cycling Association UCI changed the rules and admitted only classical bicycles for record trials. In 2014, Brian Cookson, new UCI President, changed the rules again admitting quick bicycles thus trying to breathe new life into the competition – with success.

And again with an innovation: The professional team of Basel Cross Klinik medically and scientifically supporting the TREK FACTORY team with Jens Voigt relied on precooling before the start. During the warm-up of 25 minutes following the scooter, Jens Voigt wore the cooling vest and arm coolers. Subsequently, his shirt was sprayed with water.

Jens Voigt was impressed and consequently started with a cool head. Result: World record!
